Friday 12 March 2010, Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) – Twenty scientists gathered recently at an International Tuna Tagging Workshop held at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community’s (SPC) headquarters in New Caledonia.  The world’s largest ever tuna tagging project has released over 250,000 tagged tuna into the equatorial Western and Central Pacific Ocean and 35,000 tags have already been recovered. The data being collected will help in sustaining and protecting the world’s largest resource of tuna.

 

The official launching of the Vanuatu Church Partnership Program (VCPP) on Thursday 11 March 2010 marks a new program of support to the Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC) and six other local churches including the Presbyterian Church, Anglican Church, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Churches of Christ, Apostolic Church and the Assemblies of God Church.

 

Transparency International Vanuatu says the police commissioner should immediately resign to allow for an independent inquiry into the death of a prisoner in custody.

This follows a damning Coroner's report into the death of John Bule after he had been interrogated by staff from the paramilitary unit, the Vanuatu Mobile Force.

The Vanuatu Coroner says the Government needs to rein in the police paramilitary unit, the Vanuatu Mobile Force.

This comes after an inquest into the death of a prisoner while in VMF custody.

John Bule, a convicted rapist, had escaped and been at large for a month before being recaptured by the VMF. He was fit and healthy but after a VMF interrogation he was hospitalised with multiple injuries and died later the day he was recaptured.

Many will be sad to hear that Bernard Narakobi died yesterday, Tuesday 9 March, 2010.

Bernard Narakobi was a Papua New Guinean lawyer, politician, philosopher, and the author of several widely read books. Over his life he served as MP for Wewak, Speaker of Parliament and in later years, as the High Commissioner to New Zealand.

Narkobi made immense contributions to the forging of the new state of Papua New Guinea particularly in these roles, and as Chairman of the Law Reform Commission.
